Each year students at Maharishi University of Management enjoy dozens of extracurricular events. Behind many of these activities is none other than Maharishi University of Management’s Student Activities office.

Maharishi University of Management (MUM) Student Activities Director, Rianna Koppel says, “We facilitate what the students want. It is sweet and meaningful to see the students watch the ideas they bring to us become an event or celebration. It’s really satisfying to them to have people and students show up and celebrate an occasion that  they feel is important, and that in turn is satisfying to us.”

Rianna works with Yali Jiang, Assistant Director of Student Activities, and about ten work-study students to pull-off countless events each year. Most people on campus know about the annual events…:

  • Halloween Ball
  • Student Celebration Week
  • Open Mic (monthly)
  • Variety Show
  • Graduation Ball

…and are aware of the numerous cultural events celebrating the diverse student body on campus:

However, many people might not realize that the Student Activities Department also orchestrates many “smaller events” on campus like lectures, film shows, games nights, and evening chats with faculty. If they aren’t organizing an event, the department is disseminating information and advertising other on-campus activities like an art opening at Unity Gallery (located in the University library) or rock climbing lessons at the Recreation Center.

Another, behind the scenes, role of Student Activities is to create an efficient system and structure for how events are run on campus ie. event approval guidelines, fund-raising guidelines, marketing guidelines,  and advertising guidelines. Student Activities works with the Department of Student Life, faculty,  and Global Student Council to look at their policies in light of MUM’s mission and refine them in alignment with University goals and student needs and desires.

“Our office organizes student celebrations and events, and facilitates the alignment of those activities with the mission of Maharishi University of Management. We offer resources for students to do just about anything. If students want any outside of class events or activities, we help make those happen. Our number one priority is to host events that the students want. If a student has an idea for an event, they can come to me or Yali and we will help them figure out the best way to proceed with it.”
