Brrrrr…it’s cold outside! During Winter in Iowa, when it’s enticing to hibernate inside with hot chocolate and a book, it can be a challenge to get out the door and exercise. Luckily Maharishi University of Management and the Fairfield community have several options to help the students and locals out.
On the indoor recreation side of things, here is a sampling of facilities (several offer classes taught by Maharishi University of Management alumni):
- Maharishi University of Management’s Fitness and Rec Center
- Roosevelt Indoor Aquatic and Rec Center
- Open Space Studio
- Fairfield Art of Dance
- Curves
- Passion Dance Studio
- Boom Fitness
Whether you prefer to do your own thing in the weight room, climb the rock wall, or take yoga or spin classes, there really is something for everyone in the Fairfield Winter exercise scene. And to get motivated, it helps to choose an activity that you enjoy as well as remember that exercising will:
- Help combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
- Boost your immune system
- Help you keep off the accumulation of pounds from holiday sweets and treats
If you’re the one shoveling your side-walk, are a winter-sports fan, or are a die-hard out-door exercise fiend, you’ll probably enjoy exploring Find the Data’s comparison of calories burned during various winter activities. Check it out here.
Regardless of the activity, if you’re outside, the Mayo Clinic recommends dressing in layers and keeping your hands, feet, and head warm. It’s also always a good idea to check the weather forecast before you head out; no one wants to get stuck running in a freezing rainstorm.
Motivation isn’t much of an issue for most Maharishi University of Management students since exercising is a required portion of their educational regime. They actually receive credit for working out. All students take a class through the Exercise and Sports Science department; afterwards, on an on-going basis, they receive credit for submitting activity logs. Credit is given on a pass/fail basis and students are encouraged to get help from staff and faculty to set up a personalized exercise program complete with strategies and goals.

Be healthy, stay warm, and have a happy holiday season!
