Twice a year select Maharishi University of Management students, staff, and faculty embark on an outdoor leadership excursion called Base Camp. Base Camp is an off-campus residential trip where Maharishi University of Management students, staff and faculty forge friendships while participating in outdoor activities like canoeing, camping, hiking, swimming, skiing, snow boarding, ice-skating, and sledding. It occurs once at the beginning of the Fall semester and once at the beginning of the Winter semester.
Professor Ken Daley leads these outdoor adventures, and many others throughout the year. He told me, “BaseCamp started as an opportunity to take our newly arrived freshmen into the wilderness away from their everyday world so they can get to experience each other and the faculty and staff in a unique and unencumbered environment where we create a caldron, cooking-up friendships to last a lifetime.”
Base Camp is part of the first-year curriculum at Maharishi University of Management. It’s a celebration after the first class the “Science and Technology of Consciousness”, which all first-year students take. In the Fall, participants go to the beautiful Current River wilderness area in Missouri’s Ozark Mountains. Students entering in January have a winter retreat featuring skiing and ice-skating. The emphasis for both trips is on cooperation, learning outdoor skills, and having fun.
“Base camp was a fantastic experience. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to go. From hiking to canoeing to smores by the fire to waking up at 7am and meditating in tents, Professor Ken Daley has created a wonderful trip for our new students, faculty, and staff to bond together as we connected with the beauty of nature,” said Sarah Sica, Maharishi University of Management Admissions Counselor.
This season’s trip included:
- 3 days camping along the Current River in Southern Missouri
- 10 mile canoe trip
- Johnson Shut-ins (naturally occurring water slides)
- A back-country off trail wilderness hike complete with fording a river
- Music around the campfire
- Campfire stories and games
- Flaming poi
Professor Daly commented, “The Fall 2011 BaseCamp was a blast. The weather was just enough off to turn it into an adventure but not so far off to turn to folly.”
