Wherever I am in the U.S., I always look forward to weekend Farmer’s Markets. Fresh local food, entertainment, crafts, and friends are just a few of the things that shape a good farmer’s market, and Fairfield, Iowa has them all.
Fairfield is home to Maharishi University of Management and May through October students, along with the rest of the town, get outside and show up for the outdoor farmer’s market. All the items sold at the market are home grown and/or produced in the Jefferson County region. Alongside the beautifully delicious array of fruits, vegetables, and baked goods, local vendors supply a large selection of handmade arts and crafts and plants to take home for your garden.
You never know what will happen at the market, you might show up to collect your weeks’ supply of lettuce greens from the Maharishi University of Management student farm and end up eating locally made Ethiopian cuisine from one of the vendors for lunch. Perhaps, you show up for the salsa tasting in July and are surprised by a Bollywood dancing flash mob or the bluegrass group Lester Cloak Memorial String Band. Phil Rabalais, MUM alumn and Market Promoter, shares a glimpse of this summer’s festivities, “This year at the Fairfield Farmer’s Market we are featuring music and events every weekend. We’ll be featuring both local and regional musicians and events ranging from face painting to strawberry tasting to tractor pulling.”
Whether you choose to buy fresh and local at the farmer’s market for ethical, environmental, or purely social reasons, there seems to be something for everyone – even the kids. The market is located in a park offering plenty of picnicking space and a well-equipped playground for kids to run around on.
Hope to see you at the next Fairfield Farmer’s Market!
