Hello everyone! I’m in Stuart Tanner’s creative film class and our first assignment was to create a “happening.” A happening is an interactive art form, it must have at least two witnesses, two people that watch the art as it HAPPENS.
Sounds pretty crazy, right? Well you haven’t heard anything yet :]
My team in the class took it to the next level and set up an elaborate plan to pretend that I was a “Famous pop star from France” walking around a city about an hour from our town. The others in the class acted as my “bodyguards, paparazzi, camera crew, and adoring fans.” A lot of people walking around Iowa City fell for it! Here is a video I edited in class out of the footage we captured.
Enjoy!

that was totally amazing. enjoyed watching it! iowa city was my old stomping ground… so funny how people’s perception can change so easily. amazing.
thanks
Hilarious! I love the snippets at the end especially…”I don’t know her”! LOL! And the blurbs about acting! This was really well done, guys!
Brilliant! That looked like so much fun and it’s amazing how you can create buzz by appropriating the contemporary visual tropes of celebrity. You played it well!
I like this notion of “I don’t know who she is, but I’m going to snap a picture or get her autograph because she looks like someone famous.” This would just as well in Chicago as it does in Iowa City, I think (there have been quite a few celebs pass through Iowa City, by the way, so it’s totally feasible. My husband’s friends had Kurt Cobain stay at their house back int the day).
I wonder if anyone looked you up later and found out it was a performance? Did you get any feedback from your audience?
Thank you everyone, I appreciate your feedback!
To answer your question Kristie, I don’t know if anyone in Iowa City looked me up after my appearance… a lot of people thought I was Lady Gaga!
